Join the La Plata Broadband for this opportunity of exploration, education, and service in the newly designated Hermosa Wilderness! This BroadWalk involves a 3-mile hike from the parking lot into the Salt Creek trail area of Hermosa Wilderness. The first mile is a gradual uphill, followed by a 2 mile descent to the base camp. Maximum 7 people. A $50 fee is required to book your spot. Payments must be made by July 30 in order to plan trip supplies.
Four backcountry horsemen have committed for the trash packing project. They are all quite experienced and very interested in the project. In addition to trash pickup, you will have the opportunity to explore the beautiful backcountry area. We have 3 speakers lined up for the night of Aug. 23 in the basecamp. Marsha Porter-Norton will talk about the process of the community group that worked on the Hermosa Creek Watershed Special Management Bill, which includes the Hermosa Creek Wilderness. Kara Cadwick, our San Juan National Forest Supervisor, will talk about the importance of Wilderness on the San Juan NF and the role of partners in forest management. Ann Bond, the forest Public Relations officer, will attend to get some photos and press for a news article about the project. Anne Dal Vera, a La Plata Broad, is coordinating the project and will be at the project the whole time.
Food, cooking pots, stoves, and fuel will be provided in bulk and packed in by horse. They may be able to pack in tents or sleeping bags, but that is not certain. Please plan to pack your own gear (tent, pad, sleeping bag, personal supplies).
