Broads Postion on Off-Road Vehicle Activity

The activities undertaken by Great Old Broads for Wilderness are guided by the overriding principle that the focus of attention must be on what is best for the land, for Mother Earth.

  • New roadways must not be created in roadless areas, an action that would result in the loss of wilderness characteristics of an area.
  • Motorized and non-motorized vehicle use (four-wheel drive vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, and snowmobiles) on public lands should occur only on designated roadways and trails.
  • Broads supports the policy of “Closed unless posted Open” as the underlying principle to determine where any vehicle travel can occur on public lands.
  • Where appropriate Broads will advocate for the closure of roadways where maintenance costs or the potential for environmental or cultural resources damage exceed public use benefits.
  • Public agencies must be held accountable for following and enforcing existing management plans in a timely manner.
