GREAT
OLD BROADS STAFF
Broads staff is
passionate about and dedicated to the cause of protecting and preserving
wilderness for all time. We also make sure to keep a "Broad" sense
of humor every step of the way!
Rose
Chilcoat, Program Director – Rose
comes to Broads with 13 years of experience working for the U.S. Forest
Service and the National Parks Service. Having worked as a park ranger
at Mesa Verde NP, Bryce Canyon NP, Rocky Mountain NP and Coulee Dam
NRA, she ultimately ended up in the Alaska Regional Office of the Park
Service where she worked as a Concessions Analyst managing over 350
commercial service providers in the Alaska parks. She was also an Outdoor
Recreation Planner with the Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance
program in Alaska before returning to Durango in 1993. She has experience
working with not-for-profit organizations and is currently president
of the Board of Directors for Durango Nature Studies. She received
a B.S. in Horticulture summa cum laude from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg,
VA. With her knowledge of the issues and her immense enthusiasm for
wilderness, Rose makes sure that Broads are out on-the-ground in places
that our voices can be heard and make a difference.
Veronica
Egan, Executive Director – Veronica
joined Broads staff in the fall of 2002, bringing with her a wealth of
knowledge and history of Broads. She has been a Great Old Broad for 12
years (almost as long as we've been around) and was a Board member for
2 years before taking on the role of Executive Director. Veronica attended
Michigan State University, studying art, animal husbandry, and philosophy.
She has been a guide and outfitter both on her family’s
guest ranch outside
of Santa Fe, NM, and for Colorado Outward Bound and Pack Creek Ranch
in Moab. She has been a staff member for the Santa Fe Mountain Center,
an experiential education program, and has served on the Boards of the
Backcountry Horsemen of New Mexico, Rio Arriba County Fair, Espanola
Animal Shelter and Life Education Network of the Southwest. Veronica
has worked for years in environmental advocacy, volunteering for the
New Mexico Sierra Club, the Central Clearing House in Santa Fe, and the
Santa Fe Trails Coalition. Her passion for wilderness and her tireless
work are helping us to make "Broad" strides for wilderness
protection.
Logan
Morley, Broads Healthy Lands Project Data Coordinator - As
the BHLP
Coordinator, Logan will
have a range of duties including data entry of all off-road vehicle(ORV)
monitoring data collectedand
technical support for streamlining the data-collection process and database,
as well as being an on-the-ground trainer and staff interface with our
various project partners. Logan
was raised in the mountains of southwest Virginia. He received a BFA
from the University of Kansas and a second degree in
Anthropology from Fort Lewis College in Durango. He is an outdoor enthusiast
and enjoys hiking, climbing, biking, and running. He is excited to be
working for an organization such as Broads that allows him to combine
his educational skills with his passion for wildlands.
Tim
Peterson, Broads Healthy Lands Project Director -
As a fifth generation westerner,Tim
cares deeply about our public lands and values the window they can give
us into a time when North America was still a vast, wild and unforgiving
expanse. Tim comes to the Broads with
nearly a decade of on-the-ground field experience inventorying and advocating
for wildlands in five western states. He cut his teeth assisting
with a comprehensive statewide field re-inventory of Utah’s Redrock
Wilderness Act, and moved on to conduct field inventory and off-road
vehicle monitoring on Utah’s National Forests, and in Colorado,
New Mexico, Nevada, and Montana. Between stints, he’s conducted
GIS mapping, NEPA project work, and policy and legal analysis for local,
regional and national conservation groups.
Suzanne
Strazza , Development Director - Suzanne
has been a Broad-at-heart for many years. Having
grown up in New Jersey, her life changed during her first visit to the
vastness and beauty of the canyons of Southern UT. Climber, boater
and mountaineer, Suzanne combined her passion for the outdoors with her
need to eat by working for Colorado Outward Bound, exploring the wilds
of Colorado, Utah and Alaska. She and her husband chose to move
out of their van into a house in Southwestern Colorado to be close to
both the mountains and the desert. They have two boys, who are
being raised as she feels all children should be: close to the earth. Suzanne
has been actively involved in education, nonprofits and community since
settling down, earning her a wealth of experience in fundraising, promotion,
and grant writing and administration. Both a writer and journalist,
she often covers environmental issues in the Four Corners area in addition
to publishing works on the importance of nurturing a passion for nature
in children. Wilderness advocacy is a dream job for her.
Anne Benson , Communications Coordinator - Anne joined Broads with nearly 20 years of experience in the communication industry with stints in journalism as the editor of a small-town Northern Colorado newspaper and in corporate marketing for a large, national civil engineering firm. She holds a bachelor's degree in literature and a master's degree in communication, both from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She was raised in the farm country of Upstate New York and spent many family vacations camping, swimming, and hiking in and around the Adirondack Mountains. She was drawn to the open sky of the western states as a young woman after completing a course with the Lander, Wyoming based National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). In 1980, she and her husband moved their young family from northern New Hampshire to Colorado, where the broad, blue sky is met by snow-capped mountains. She is responsible for Broads' newsletter, Broadsides, as well as the website content, press relations, auction coordination, and miscellaneous other tasks.
Joyce Thomsen , Membership Assistant - Joyce is excited to be making the transition from practicing chiropractic for nearly 23 years in Durango to participating actively in the preservation of the “back country,” which incidentally is also the name of her practice where she has enjoyed hiking, biking and skiing in her spare time for most of those same years. Ya, ya betcha she grew up on a farm in Minnesota, and credits her parents with showing her the beauty and value of open country on their many family vacations, especially to the American west. She earned bachelor degrees in physical education and distributive science at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, then continued her education with a bachelor of science in human biology and a doctor of chiropractic degree from National College of Chiropractic, Lombard, IL. She looks forward to interacting with other Broads, and helping to make a difference!
