Grassroots Leadership Director
OUR MISSION: Great Old Broads for Wilderness is a women-led national grassroots organization that engages and inspires activism to preserve and protect wilderness and wild lands.
Position Description:
The Grassroots Leadership (Director) oversees the training, guidance, and support of volunteer Broadband Leaders. (Broadbands are women-led grassroots chapters, with 40+ across the country.) They are responsible for providing researched, high quality, grassroots training and support as they work to protect public lands and the climate through education, advocacy, and stewardship, all embodied in Broads’ brand of fun.
This position will also oversee the coordination and administration of all aspects of the Grassroots Leadership Program (GLP). HOW: By creatively managing the program to support our strategic plan; by updating best practices and grassroots organizing strategies, and supervising staff, and facilitating all program activities.
- This is a permanent, exempt, full-time position.
- Reports to the Executive Director.
- Some weekend/evening hours are required; some travel required.
- Broads allows for flexible work schedules.
- This position can be a remote position.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, and mentor the Grassroots Regional Coordinators in tandem with the Grassroots Advocacy Manager
- Mentor volunteers and interns
- May play a role in recruitment, hiring, and termination of Grassroots Leadership Program staff.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
Advocacy and Leadership Development
- Manage Broadband Leadership Team Members; train GLP staff to provide guidance, support, resources, and tools, through one-on-one and team-based approaches.
- Maintain timely and transparent communication with partner organizations, staying informed on key issues and campaigns locally and nationally.
- Build and maintain partnerships with key stakeholders and constituents to expand capacity and effectiveness of Broads’ work
- Manage and oversee all trainings, events, and gatherings that involve leadership and advocacy development for Broadband leaders, both in-person and virtually. Some training sessions could be open to the entire membership.
- Manage and collaborate in the planning, implementation and follow-up of multi-day campouts for advocacy, education, and citizen science/stewardship.
- Supports building relationships and collaborations with communities who have been historically underrepresented in the mainstream conservation movement.
Organizational and Program Administration and Operations
- Oversee coordination and administration of all aspects of the GLP, including planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and facilitating program activities.
Program Growth and Sustainability
- Create effective strategies for the recruitment, retention, and expansion of Broadband leadership teams.
- Develop and implement an evaluation framework to assess the strengths and gaps in the program and to identify areas for improvement.
- Support fundraising efforts by representing Broads at donor events.
- Work with staff and board to build capacity and increase organizational reach through fundraising, membership, communications, marketing, and strategic plan implementation.
- Develop new initiatives to support the strategic direction of the organization, including trainings, programs, and fundraising events.
Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director to support the mission and success of the organization.
The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following qualifications:
- Minimum three (3) years leadership development and training experience, preferably in a conservation organization with volunteer constituencies.
- Knowledgeable in current, effective grassroots organizing models and processes.
- Versed in how Equity, Justice, Inclusion, and Diversity supports public lands conservation.
- Skilled in executing leadership training and event coordination.
- Have an outgoing and friendly personality with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- A passion for community organizing and relationship development.
- Ability to work well with and inspire a diverse range of volunteers (age, personalities, knowledge base, experience levels, computer skills).
- Excellent writing, editing, and public speaking skills.
- Attention to detail and ability to consistently follow through with commitments.
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects to meet established timelines and reporting requirements.
- Proficient in MS Office, Google Drive, Google Groups, social media, spreadsheets, and listservs. Constant Contact and WordPress experience are a plus.
- Willingness and able to engage in outdoor activities (e.g.: hiking, car camping, event setup) in variable weather for extended periods of time.
- Ability to work independently and set priorities with minimal supervision.
- Effective, self-motivated, efficient, and energetic team player, with a great sense of humor.
Compensation and Benefits:
Salary range is $60,000 – $67,000 based on experience.
