Finding the Mother Tree, Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest by Suzanne Simard
Did you know that forest trees have caring mothers? Ecologist Suzanne Simard says that trees are social creatures that communicate with each other in cooperative ways, often linked to an old growth “Mother” tree by an underground network of fungi that resembles the neural network in a brain.  Simard is a ground-breaking scientist whose research has changed our understanding of forest ecology.  Her quest to understand the secret life of forests started when  she was planting trees and wondered why human planted seedlings did so poorly compared to those growing naturally. In this memoir, Simard tells a deeply personal story about family, grief and scientific discovery. Her book is getting rave reviews. We picked this one for our next book discussion because so many Broads seem to be reading it already!
