Broadwork Service Project: Monitoring of Forage Production in Grand Staircase Escalante Region

Dates: April 24-28, 2014
Location: Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument (GSENM)/Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (GCNRA) off the Hole in the Rock Road, near Escalante, UT
Cost: $115 member/$140 non-member

Events begin with happy hour/dinner on the first date listed and end with breakfast on the last date listed.

Broads is partnering with Western Watersheds Project (WWP) to clip forage samples to determine how much forage is available for livestock and wildlife. Jonathan Ratner of WWP (the premier public lands grazing reform outfit in the country) is the project lead. If you’ve ever been to the Grand Staircase Escalante region you already know that cows have precious little left to eat in that landscape of slickrock and canyons. Is it a problem of too many cows, too little forage, or both? We will gather data to provide science to support our common sense observations.

The process involves clipping all forage species within plots throughout a pasture. The clipped material gets bagged, dried and weighed in order to determine actual forage production across the pasture.

We’ll camp as a group and Broads will provide yummy breakfasts and dinners each day with Ronni Egan as our able camp cook. We’ll provide a port-o-potty. This area is absolutely gorgeous in late April making this feel less like “work” and more like fun.

Join us and fellow citizens concerned about grazing impacts in GSENM in this year when the Monument is yet again trying to address grazing management. Where else can you spend time in the glorious Escalante Canyons, help to improve land management and hang out with fellow Great Old Broads? Sounds like a perfect combination!
