Miles for the Wild Hike-a-thon Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS MILES FOR THE WILD HIKE-A-THON?
Miles for the Wild Hike-a-thon is a community fundraising event that gives hikers the opportunity to raise funds for Great Old Broads for Wilderness. Throughout September, Hike-a-thon participants hike, share stories of their outdoor adventures, and raise funds that directly impact Great Old Broads for Wilderness and the work we do.
Broads empowers women to use democracy to defend our birthright—the public lands and waters of the United States. We train and mobilize advocates in communities across the nation to rally for clean air and water and a healthy habitat for all of Earth’s creatures. We focus on four core activities: Education, Advocacy, Stewardship, and Fun!
HOW DO I REGISTER?
Registration for this year’s Hike-a-thon is now open! Hike-a-thoners can participate as individuals or as a team.
IS THERE A REGISTRATION FEE?
No! Registering for Hike-a-thon is free.
WHAT PRIZES CAN I WIN?
Prizes are awarded to leaders in different categories — such as the chapter that hikes the greatest number of miles will win a wine and chocolate party, the individual that raises the most amount of money will win a Broads zip-up hoodie, and everyone who participates will be entered to win a collection of Broads gear.
20% of the money earned as a Broadband team will be credited to the chapter’s soft credit account.
WHO CAN HIKE FOR HIKE-A-THON?
Anyone who loves to hike can participate in the Hike-a-thon! There are no age restrictions. Just sign up and start reaching out to your community for sponsorship of your miles!
SHOULD I SIGN UP AS A BROADBAND CHAPTER OR AS AN INDIVIDUAL?
That depends on whether you are an active member of your chapter. If not, this would be a good way to meet other chapter members! If you want to hike solo, or with a partner, friend or family, check with them to see if they’d like to get supporters for their miles. Broadbands don’t necessarily have to create a special event for the Hike-a-thon—simply check the calendar for hikes and stewardship projects already scheduled, and log those miles!
DO MY HIKE-A-THON DONORS BECOME GREAT OLD BROADS FOR WILDERNESS MEMBERS?
Yes! And any donation over $100 gets a membership t-shirt. All donations made to Great Old Broads for Wilderness through the Miles for the Wild Hike-a-thon are fully tax-deductible.
HOW DO I SPONSOR A HIKER?
You can sponsor an individual Broad or Bro, or an entire Broadband, by going to https://bit.ly/BroadsHikeAThon.
DO I NEED TO BE ON SOCIAL MEDIA TO PARTICIPATE:
No! But it’s easier if you are, and if you aren’t, you can send emails to your family and friends or give them a call. It’s also easier for them to donate online!
DO I NEED TO HIKE ON NAMED TRAILS IN ORDER TO LOG HIKING MILES?
No! Hike-a-thon miles do not need to be on a named trail.
CAN I HIKE IN OTHER STATES, BEYOND MY OWN STATE/BB CHAPTER LOCATION FOR HIKE-A-THON?
Any mile hiked anywhere in the world can count as a Hike-a-thon mile.
