rose+cristina+ronni - escalante riverEncore!

For a fifth and final year, Broads will return to the banks of the Escalante River with Grand Staircase Escalante Partners for a weeklong adventure in stewardship. We’ll remove non-native Russian olive that competes with native species, disrupts river flow, and throws the riparian ecosystem out of balance.

Removing Russian olive is arduous, “wo-manual” labor—but you’ll be hanging with a great bunch of Broads. After four days of hard (but gratifying) work, we’ll spend a day hiking, playing in the river, or exploring the stunning red rock surroundings and timeless wind-swept arches.

Broads will hike in to our basecamp, with personal gear, while horses will pack in heavy items (like camp chairs, camp kitchen, group food, and tools).

Two legendary Broads will lead this trip: Broads’ Board Member Cristina Harmon (a sassy Broad with a million dollar sense of humor) and former Executive Director and Backcountry Cook Extraordinaire Ronni Egan, who brings years of experience in conservation and guiding backcountry trips. Ronni’s stories are renowned throughout the southwest—so you’re in for a treat. Cost includes breakfasts and dinners. Participants provide their own lunches and snacks.

By the way, you may want to stick around after the Broadwalk and treat yourself to the Escalante Canyons Art Festival that continues through Oct 1st. There will be plenty of art, live entertainment, and exhibits. To learn more, visit

NOTE: The work intensity level is high on this project. You will be clipping sprouts, sawing branches, and hauling brush. Please consider your abilities before signing up.

More details and a packing list will be sent to registrants 3–4 weeks before the event.

We love animals, but NO PETS, PLEASE.

Join Broads at the beautiful Escalante River, one of the west’s last free-flowing rivers to remove invasive Russian olive shoulder-to-shoulder with fellow wilderness stewards. As always, we’ll work hard and play even harder!
