Short Description of Activity

Met with Martin from REI Anchorage to review Great Old Broads and were introduced to two other REI employees who are interested in Broads. Reviewed what Broads was and who we are. Then met with Eric at Alaska Rock Gym. We gave out information and then got a tour of the gym, spoke with the employees and and had a lesson in rock climbing nomenclature etc. We met Siri, the gym manager, who wants to be part of Great Old Broads. We set up a date to meet with Sagar, the gym photographer, to take photos of Kathy and I to be used in any way we want.

Reflection/Evaluation

We had a lot of interest and Kathy and I were invigorated by the atmosphere. Siri is awesome. We also passed out leaflets, hung fliers for our kickoff meeting, and they made space for us to leave brochures. The Rock Gym has a cadre of ‘older’ climbers who come most days between 11 and 1 and they want us back to meet them (and maybe join them). Eric made the offer of a few hours of gym time intro climbing for a future meeting activity for Alaska Soles. They are a very energetic and informed group who are very enthusiastic about have a Great Old Broads for Wilderness Broadband here, and very supportive of our goals. REI offered to us a chance to use the previewing of the all women climbing film, Pretty Strong, which REI has the rights to (produced and filmed by women, funded by REI) at the local Beartooth Theatre Pub as a fundraising for Alaska Soles. If at least 300 people attend, which is (before Corvid 19) probable judging by the sell out of the movie in other states, the Alaska Soles will get 70% of the door take. We will also have 15 minutes before the film to have an informational presentation about Great Old Broads and Alaska Soles. The Alaska Rock Gym will assist in sponsoring the event, and will advertise it widely The photos they will later take will be made into a montage to show at the event, utilizing some of our other photos also. They will give us the photos and all rights to them to be used as we want. This was a really productive couple of meetings and we were thrilled with the offers and people we met and the opportunities that they offer in the future.
