Short Description of Activity

Phone call with Mary Fleischmann, her broadband has a 7 member leadership team. Each member contributes by using their unique toolset such as website updating, email alerts, stewardship, advocacy. Mary is good at running the leadership meetings and keeping everyone on track.
Leadership team meets at the end of the year (mini-retreat) to determine what their focus will be for the next year. They determine the activities around three focus areas, she determines the talking points. They also discuss what they accomplished and what directions they will go in during the next year. Some of her leadership team and members have contacts with outdoor agencies because they worked in those areas!
Talked about resources on national website. They offer “Broadchats” to large number of people, anyone can attend, they invite speakers and put notice in local paper sometimes. Broadchats are held every month except summer months. At the Broadchats they go over mission and their direction. They have a large broadband (100-150 paying broads), encourage membership which increases their soft credit. Their activities are also available to learn about the Oregon Wild online newsletter, https://oregonwild.org/about/blog/bumbling-great-old-broads.
They survey their members to decide where their interest lie, and then they receive emails accordingly. They welcome Bros, one even organizes and leads their hikes.
How she became a leader: She went to an advertised Broadchat. members noticed that she spoke up a lot in meetings and asked her if she wanted to be part of the leadership team. She had a one-on-one meeting with the leader.
Her biggest lesson learned: local stakeholders should know who their are, partner with local groups.
What resources do they use the most:
What does she love most about being a Broadband Leader: loved connecting with other women with similar interests.
What are they currently focusing on: Jordan Cove natural gas pipeline, breaching of four dams on the Snake River. Working with Washington and Idaho on the project.
What resources do they use the most: Mary found the resources on national page very helpful.

Reflection/Evaluation

1. Need to get leadership team (5 members) together using zoom to look at our year and discuss how we should proceed. Will look into the Fantastic Fungi movie and how to make it available to everyone.
2. Need to get activities on national page
3. Connect with local agencies for more exposure of our events (online newsletter etc.)
4. Jan will connect deeper with Northwoods Volunteer Connection’s new coordinator. Possible new broadband members for Duluth area. Seemed very interested in our group.
5. Need to look at resources on national page.
6. Don’t try to do it all!!!! Delegate.
