Short Description of Activity

Virtual meeting to update each other and look ahead to 2021 activities. Current local issues we’re following, and commenting on, are the Draft EIS for Grand Targhee Ski Area’s proposed expansion (expected mid-spring 2021) and the possibility of allowing access for motorized vehicles into newly acquired property in Caribou-Targhee NF (Maytag property). We have committed to participating in solitude monitoring next summer in the Jedediah Smith Wilderness Area, as well as trail rehabilitation in Darby Canyon and Coyote Meadows (also in Jed Smith WA). We look forward to resuming a more normal summer schedule of weekly hiking and biking activities.

Reflection/Evaluation

We developed a plan to involve our membership in advocacy actions. When time allows, the leadership team will take a position on the current issue, notify members of the issue via our weekly email (including relevant links for background information), invite them to add their name to the leadership position or send in their own response on the issue.
We discussed the possibility of creating a Facebook page for the WHALES to enhance communication, share photos and post action alerts. The question of whether the page should be public or private arose. No decision was reached, at this time.
