Short Description of Activity

Getting caught up with all things fire going on in Oregon legislature. One discussion was to separate Water/Rivers from the full Forest/River group. Washington state has specific river issues they are dealing with separate from Oregon. Group agreed, but all can deal with river issues as they present themselves in any PNW areas. This group will continue to support Wyden’s Wild and Scenic River Bill.

Reflection/Evaluation

Lots was discussed. Wild and Scenic River act is still in the wings. Montana’s Tusher is working on something regarding the Montana headwaters – but different from wild and scenic. The Owyhee bill has been introduced, not sure what is going on but Julie Weikel is working with Wyden’s office on this. Conversation about post fire logging and various legislation that is flying around regarding what that looks like as well as the emergency board in Salem and how they are allocating dollars to public lands/ firefighting efforts. There is Forest policy being developed, concerns regarding ODF and how they deal with climate change. They have been going ahead with their decisions without public input…Need to follow up with the work of the Global Warming Commission. Bitterbrush Broads and others sent letter to Federal policy group/Biden to encourage an executive order to stop logging in the PNW and then ask for more permanent action regarding mature tree’s. Wednesday is Biden’s Climate Action Day. Conversation around the need to address carbon storage. Codify the roadless – Tongas. Wyden/Merkley so-signed.
Roadless bill HR 2491. Eastside screens- potential for litgation. Oregon legislative bills/ OFREE, Golden Bill Wildfire bill? Letter regarding east side screenings, put one together that others can work from or sign on. Mary will have Amy and Jamie look at these.
