Short Description of Activity

Our host, rancher and clean air advocate Don Schreiber, will lead a discussion with:
Chili Yazzie, a member of the Diné Nation and long-time resident of Shiprock
Nathalie Eddy, New Mexico Field Advocate for the nonprofit organization Earthworks
Dr. David Dubois, New Mexico State Climatologist
Discussion will cover:
Climate-change causing pollution and how it impacts New Mexicans
How oil and gas production impacts our communities
Why reducing methane emissions matters
New Mexico Environment Department’s proposal to cut ozone-forming volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and methane released by the oil and gas industry.
How strong safeguards lead us toward more sustainable and resilient future for New Mexico

Reflection/Evaluation

Sobering, but also encouraging because the loophole exempting slow release oil and gas wells (90% of NM wells!) has now been closed. Getting the state to increase monitoring and enforcement is the next step. Increasing funding for that needs to be paid for by the oil and gas industry.
