Short Description of Activity

The GMUG forest draft plan and EIS were released to the public in mid August and the comment deadline was extended two weeks to end on Nov 26. Following the in-person socially distanced comment writing workshop on Oct 4 (reported in a separate activity report) NSJBB created and emailed to googlegroup and business supporters three separate talking points on different topics over 6 weeks soliciting comments from our members and supporters. Another in person comment writing workshop was held Nov 2 in Montrose (also reported separately.) In addition, our BB contributed significantly to the conservation coalition collaborative comments submitted by HCCA.

Reflection/Evaluation

Goal to educate our supporters and generate as many comment letters as possible endorsing the Community Conservation Proposal in its entirety and specific landscapes in particular. I consider the submission of 65 comments by our Broads community a total success with nearly 40 individuals participating. Some of the comments were short; others very detailed and thorough and nearly all highlighted important concerns such as excess acreage suitable for timber, the minimal lands identified for recommended wilderness and the omission of significant segments considered by the conservation community eligible for Wild and Scenic River status. Many comments also highlight the limited species identified as Species of Conservation Concern especially the omission of bighorn sheep. Perhaps, one of the unexpected outcomes of this process was even closer collaboration with Ouray County Commission and Town of Ridgway. All comments can be found at http://cara.ecosystem-management.org/Public/ReadingRoom?Project=51806&SearchResultsPerPage=50. I am only attaching the official Broads’ comments. Let me know if you want samples of others. Note as often is the case, some commenters spent 30 minutes or an hour; others spent 30-40 hours, but total hours are fairly accurate.
