Reflection/Evaluation
The goal of the meeting was to share progress on the EIS on the Flood Retention Facility (dam) for both SEPA and NEPA. The final EIS will be prepared at the end of the 1st quarter of 2023. It will consider events for major floods, catastrophic floods, as well as recurring flood scenarios. It will also consider climate change for high end, medium end, as well as current condition on the Chehalis Basin. The USACE will show revisions and the Record of Decision under NEPA timelines is currently unknown. The SEPA Resources of Significant Findings will include impacts of air quality and greenhouse gases, public services and utilities, and wetlands around the airport levee. The LAND Alternatives steering committee are involved in a shared values training to better work together in order to find alternatives and be ready with alternatives in the Fall of 2023. The Community Flood Assistance Program currently has 40 properties which have requested assistance and this is a voluntary program. The Aquatic Species Restoration Plan is a science-based project that selects projects for funding which will mitigate the impacts of climate change on fish and other aquatic species. This includes things such as removing fish passage barriers and placing fake “beaver dams” in the river and tributaries in order to slow and cool the water.
