Short Description of Activity
I volunteered to help with the Earth Day activities in Nogales, AZ sponsored by Sierra Club Borderlands. I attended with Kate Scott, Borderlands advocate. I worked greeting the approximately 60+ people who attended the panel discussion by Nogales AZ and Nogales Mexico community leaders and getting them situated in the La Linea art studio. After the panel the movie Ay Mariposa was shown in the downtown street next to the border wall. A beautiful moving movie intersecting three characters, The Monarch Butterflies, Marianna Trevino Wright Director of the Texas National Butterfly Center and Zulema Hernandez a lifelong migrant worker and advocate.
Reflection/Evaluation
I was down visiting Kate Scott, Border Advocate, outside Canelo, AZ when I heard they needed help at the Nogales Earth Day. This was a great last minute decision. Fantastic panel discussion and movie. I met the new Sierra Club Borderlands Director, Erick Meza along with many Borderlands Advocates I was not acquainted with. The community, police and mayor all worked together to ensure that this was a successful event.
