Short Description of Activity

Solitude Monitoring in Salmon Huckleberry Wilderness

Reflection/Evaluation

The purpose of the activity was to document visitors along the Salmon Huckleberry Trail. We started at the west end and hiked in 2.5 miles to the wilderness boundary. We used Avenza so successfully now! It is a great tool; however, we also carried a paper map as well as a battery pack for our phones. We noted 11 total groups and 5 overnighters. We encountered 21 people hiking and 1 dog off leash. We climbed a total of 1500 ft elevation and totaled over 12 miles with the combined hikes to the wilderness boundary. The Salmon Huckleberry wilderness does not have the burned sections that Mark O Hatfield does, and the view of the river is just gorgeous! We had excellent weather and visited with some great people along the trail. No occupied campsites were noted so none were monitored. We practiced dropping the pin and submitting it to Nathaniel. we did have problems with internet connectivity once we got off the trail. We believe the best way to send out texts is to stop at the ranger station and send the texts from there although it is also spotty at best. We had another wonderful day in the wilderness. Next time we’re spending the night.
