Short Description of Activity

Sam Hermanstorfer is M.S. Environment & Resources Candidate Researcher from the Carnivore Coexistence Lab,Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies | University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is involved in research on the use of non-lethal deterrents of carnivores. He needed support from volunteers to set up several ranches in Ouray and Montrose Counties with game cameras, lights that go on randomly at night to mimic a human with a flashlight, and to surround fields with fladry. Each ranch also is set up with a placebo condition for a set amount of time as well as a length of time with the experimental condition. There is no fladry during the placebo condition. On this date Judith Lopez assisted Sam to set up the placebo condition at one ranch.

Reflection/Evaluation

The ranch was set up with game cameras, lights, and rope was strung at 23 inches about ground all the way around the property which enclosed the ranch’s animals. This rope will be where the fladry will be placed during the experimental condition. The lights are not used until the experimental condition.
