Short Description of Activity

Jennifer & I met with Ray O’Neil, Monument Director, and Garth Nelson, Range Specialist to get an update on the cultural resources assessment & learn more about the Mary Austen parcel.

Reflection/Evaluation

The cultural assessment decision is taking longer than anticipated. The Mary Austen 647 acre parcel has not been transferred yet, but should happen next month. The parcel has been grazed by the donor family & it’s assumed the lease will be renewed, but they need to apply for a permit.
We suggested that CANM be co-managed with the tribes, similar to Bear’s Ears. They said that’s outside of their purview & that GOB should contact Deb Haaland & our congressional reps.
The suggestion to roundup horses on Navajo res, to lead horse tours on CANM ( like Canyon de Chelly) to provide income to the Navajos is also outside their purview. We think it’d be good to talk to Utah Dine Bikeyah & Regina Lopez-Whiteskunk about this idea. Jennifer mentioned that Backcountry Horsemen would be willing to patrol & monitor grazing activity at CANM & was referred to Diane McBride about this idea.
Ray & Garth were very cordial, while acknowledging that we have different ideas on grazing at CANM. They offered to meet with us anytime.
