Short Description of Activity

Bondi and Laurie monitored Salmon River Butte trail and Salmon River West trail for solitude and one recreation site on top of Salmon Butte

Reflection/Evaluation

Th e Salmon River Butte trail was a great one on a hot day as most of it is shaded with long incline to the top. Total elevation gain was nearly 3500 feet gain so it was a difficult hike at 12 miles overall. Lots of deciduous trees. We noted one recreation site at the top which we recorded a 5 for overall site impact. We also rated it as medium usage with no tree roots exposed. We noted a geo box at the rec site and signed our names but alas, we did not get any prizes! We also recorded a total of 3 groups and 6 individuals with 2 unleashed dogs.
The next day we monitored the West Salmon River Trail for solitude and noted 18 groups and a total of 36 hikers with 9 leashed dogs and 1 unleashed pup. We also came across 2 people having a campfire whilst a fire ban was in place. We approached them kindly and explained why the fire ban was in effect. They were not aware of the ban and respectfully started to extinguish the fire. This is where our public encounter training with the FS has really paid off.

Laurie also sent in her reimbursement for mileage and travel expenses to Lisa and Randy. We camped nearby and dined at Wraptitude in Welches, Or.
