Short Description of Activity

This was a planning call hosted by Sean Roome, Cascade Forest Conservancy

Reflection/Evaluation

The goal of the activity was to share ideas for advocating for No Mining on Green River by proposing a mineral withdrawal which would protect the Green River permanently from mining. CFC has filed 3 lawsuits against mining companies and has won all three lawsuits. We need a permanent solution to oppose mining which would be a mining withdrawal and protect 46,000 miles which includes the Green River Trail. The Cowlitz and Yakima tribes are strongly opposed to mining. There are health concerns from the pollution from the tailings polluting the Toutle River. The Toutle supplies fresh drinking water to downstream communities. The petition has over 1300 signatures. We need businesses to sign the petition and we will meet with elected officials. Maria Cantwell is the lead senator on this issue.
Laurie needs to do an Action Alert to her chapter and CFC will help with that. Postcards and engagements with local businesses including Ron Wyden in Oregon. Wyden is on the Natural Resources committee and we need Oregonians to contact Wyden to support “No Place For A Mine”. Businesses along Hway 12 and CastleRock/Longview/Kelso would also be targeted. We will be tabling at Ridgefield Birdfest in October and need to have the petition/postcards ready at that time. We also have a hike scheduled for September 24 to hike the Pumice Plain and see the area where the mine would be located in order to better understand the campaign.
