Short Description of Activity

Our riparian grazing monitoring lead filled out the Ecological Monitoring in New Mexico (Phase 1) survey. The New Mexico Forest and Watershed Restoration Institute, in partnership with New Mexico State Forestry Division, is conducting a survey of ecological monitoring in New Mexico, and requested input. This research is part of an effort to identify, strengthen and implement programs, processes, and resources to collect and analyze monitoring data and share knowledge gained. In this Phase I survey, the goal is to gain an understanding of what ecological monitoring is happening around New Mexico, where, and by whom, and to build a contact list of individuals, organizations, and/or agencies who are actively participating in monitoring. Because our broadband is actively engaged in monitoring riparian areas for grazing issues, we filled out the survey. Regarding on the ground monitoring, we were not able to participate in any surveys this month because of good monsoons and consequent high waters (flood concerns) along the streams. However, some time was spent in reviewing maps and planning for monitoring this fall.

Reflection/Evaluation

We felt it was well worth the time to fill out the survey, relative to our active monitoring in conjunction with the Gila Natl. Forest. If we receive phase 2 of the survey, we will participate in that survey also.
