Short Description of Activity

For this meeting, we read Diana Beresford-Kroeger’s book, “To Speak for the Trees: My Life’s Journey from Ancient Celtic Wisdom to a Healing Vision of the Forest.” As usual, I had prepared questions to ask the group. This time I had ten written questions. One message that a reader might take away from the book is the importance of planting and preserving trees. The morning of our meeting, Karen Lee sent around a science article by Erica Cirino entitled, “Why planting new forests could do more harm and good?” In the article, Cirino raises questions about assuming that planting new forest constitutes an adequate approach. This article provided a useful point/counterpoint for our discussion.

Reflection/Evaluation

The contrast between Beresford-Kroeger’s message and that of Erica Cirino sparked a spirited discussion in our group so it turned into evening filled with our Broads sharing their honest thoughts and opinions. Our group also likes to share personal experiences that are relevant to the book we have read. Beresford-Kroeger’s discussion of Celtic wisdom and myths provoked a stimulating discussion and comparison with other traditions such as those of indigenous peoples and native tribes. One member or our group has been participating in such traditions with native peoples, and she happily discussed these experiences with us.
