Short Description of Activity

The local Audubon Society sent out an alert that a proposed trail alignment would be going through a local estuary and urged people to write in with comments. In the “Reflect Section” I pasted in the contents of my comment.

Reflection/Evaluation

Comment:Re: Comments on Trail proposal
I appreciate the efforts to add another trail in Anchorage and the opportunity to provide comments.
Reading through the information, it appears the new trail’s use would be similar to the coastal trail.
I would urge you NOT to consider alternatives N1or N2 as they both go through an estuary habitat, which provides habitat for nesting, feeding and resting of birds. Many people using the coastal trail bike or recreate with their dogs. These types of activities would be disruptive to the birds and may lead them to abandon the use of this estuary.
The estuary also provides a rearing area for fish and invertebrates, which are important in the natural cycle. A healthy estuary also serves as a natural filter for runoff water from the stream before it flows into the inlet.
If you wanted to provide a small turnout or rest area along the trail with a bench to observe the wildlife, to just to slow down and enjoy the natural setting, that might serve the purpose of “connecting more people with nature.” A interpretive sign describing the importance of Estuaries such as this, might be a nice addition too.
It appears N3 may be a preferable option, as it would allow people to travel past the estuary with their recreational activities, but minimize the disturbances.
