Short Description of Activity

Polly Dyer Seattle Broads journeyed to the Skagit River Interpretive Center for a two-hour interpretive nature hike to view the bald eagles. At this time of year, migrating bald eagles gather on the Skagit River to feed on the spawning salmon. Our Interpretive Center guide for the hike helped us Broads better understand the Skagit River ecosystem with an emphasis on the winter migration of bald eagles, salmon, and the vital role each play in our environment. Our Hike and “Fun” Chair, Barbara Muirhead, planned this amazing activity.

Reflection/Evaluation

We had a lot of fun and learned a lot. Our guide for the hike, Joe Ordinez, spends summer months at an eagle nature preserve in Alaska where he has been a guide in the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve since 1987. Joe told us about this preserve and how it is endangered by a possible mine operation so we may take this up as an advocacy issue for our Broadband. We look forward to learning more about the Alaska Bald Eagle Preserve from reading Joe’s book which we purchased, entitled, Where Eagles Gather: The Story of the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, Haines, Alaska.
