Short Description of Activity

Over view of process for looking for new solid waste site for Deschutes County. Various partners reported out on activities they are involved with.

Reflection/Evaluation

Solid waste gave a presentation on process to choose a new landfill site, they were at 13 sites but at this point down to 10 with continuation to whittle this down to 3 before looking at final decision. Environmental Center advised that a person/group who for years have been trying to get a bridge across a wild & Scenic section of the Deschutes is once again on the radar. It is a dead deal, but seem to be picking off environmental groups off one by one to get Land Watch and others to be neutral on the issue – won’t be happening. Mike with the city reported that the counselors updating their climate action plan. Strategy is decarbonizing of buildings and also working on a tree ordinance. Land Watch working on pushing the county to review and amend their zoning codes regarding resorts – which they are now not in compliance with state law. Involved with the continued battle with Thornburg resort. Working with Center on Biodiversity to review the Deschutes Habitat Conservation Plan. A 60 day notice has been sent with the intent to sue, due to impact on endangered species. County is working on comprehensive plan which Land Watch and others will weigh in. Bitterbrush updates: Thornburg, Exclosures and Monitoring projects in the Ochoco’s, Grazing, Old & Mature trees, Amending the zoning codes and the GTN pipeline and letters to FERC. Trout Unlimited: Mike reported on the work the committee is doing regarding fish passage on Mirror Pond.
