Short Description of Activity

A zoom mtg was held with Sam Hermanstorfer. Sam Hermanstorfer conducted his M.S. thesis research on the western slope last summer focusing on carnivore coexistence. Sam operated two different projects: first, he conducted a non-lethal deterrent experiment on farms throughout Montrose and Ouray Counties to determine if certain tools can effectively keep domestic animals and carnivores separate without harming either. Next, he conducted a survey of Montrose residents regarding participants’ attitudes toward wildlife, specifically carnivores. He was excited to share his early findings with the Great Old Broads for Wilderness because of the Northern San Juan Chapter’s involvement with his work before he returns in 2023 for a complete overview of his work.
In addition to Sam sharing details of his experimental design, execution and preliminary findings, we discussed updates for the Broadband and other business.

Reflection/Evaluation

The meeting went well. It was obvious that much more research needs to be done on this important topic as wolf re-introduction proceeds in Colorado.
