Short Description of Activity
In Feb at our First Friday Brunch Meet-Up we decided to take Valentine heart shaped cookies to all of our public lands partner offices- CANM Visitor Center, Dolores Public Lands Office, and Ute Mountain Ute Environmental Center. Dan Miller, a lurker from Shelby’s time as he put it, on our Google Group suggested we add in Mesa Verde. Jennifer got a bunch of cookie trays from Sam’s Club. On Feb 10th we delivered cookies to Mesa Verde Visitor’s Center with Betty Ann and Dan Miller. On Feb 14th the Federal cuts to Public Lands staff were announced. LouAnn delivered cookies to CANM Visitor Center that day. In between, Pat delivered cookies to Dolores Public Lands Office, and me, Lois and Mary delivered to Ute Mountain Ute Environmental Office to support our Tribal Lands partners as well.
In March at our First Friday Brunch Meet-Up Dan brought 5 people from Mancos and we had 7 Broads in attendance. We put together two advocacy events- our We Heart Public Lands support march and sent two representatives to speak at Coffee with the County Commissioners. Dan designed and ordered the signs and our Broadband paid for them with. Diane Wren and 4 others came over to my house to assemble the signs with stakes. LouAnn headed up CANM, I led at Dolores Public Lands Office, and Dan led at Mesa Verde. We all joined Dan at HWY 160 and 184 at noon to make a crowd of 250 or so with our support signs on both sides of the HWY junction.
Reflection/Evaluation
The events went really well. Thanks to Diane Wren’s donation to our group, we were able to fund the signs and she showed up at my house to eat fudge and staple signs to the stakes. We supported the public lands and employees in a positive way and got many compliments for that. We still see our signs at each subsequent protest and in windows around town. Dan was a bit difficult to deal with, but Sally helped me straighten him out. We got lots of good publicity thanks to Dan and Dolores River Boating Advocates. Rica started a weekly newsletter to coordinate public lands advocacy events and updates after several groups including our 4Corners Broadband met at Dolores River Brewery.
