Short Description of Activity

The three leadership team members planned a meeting for 4/14/25 to teach attendees about and then practice using the iNaturalist app which allows recording observations of flora and fauna. This was done as a precursor to the holding of a Bioblitz on 5/12/25 in Rollans Park in Ridgway. A Bioblitz is community science event for a specific time and place where participants record their observations on iNaturalist of whatever living or once living things they find. Considerable preparation was required to set up the training and the Bioblitz on iNaturalist. Four Broadband members attended the iNaturalist training in addition to the three leadership team members. Seven people attended the Bioblitz in addition to the three leaders. Eight individuals contributed data to the Bioblitz data base. There is further work needed to try to identify all the species observed, if possible. The observers put their observations on iNaturalist to the highest level of specificity they felt able to do. Individuals outside of our Broadband who participate on iNaturalist are also providing IDs for whatever our group observed. So far there are 152 observations of 58 species.

Reflection/Evaluation

The goal of these meetings was largely educational and to expand knowledge and skills related to using the iNaturalist app. This app is used in stewardship projects in which our Broadband currently is engaged. ie. with CNHP and Big Horn Sheep monitoring. This app brings people together in awareness of the natural world which surrounds them. These meetings were good first steps toward our goal.
