Short Description of Activity

On a rainy Sunday morning in April, the Polly Dyer Seattle Broads met at the Duwamish Longhouse to take the Duwamish Eco-Tour. On the tour, the Broads walked along the Duwamish River and also saw the site of one of the Duwamish villages. The Duwamish are the “first people” of Seattle. Their website says that they were the first signatories of the Treaty of Point Elliott in 1855. Their longhouse stands today across the street from where one of their largest villages was located before it was burned down by settlers in 1895.

Reflection/Evaluation

The event was a success. We had a great turn-out of twenty Broads who went on the Duwamish Eco-Tour. The tour gave us important insights into the Duwamish history and sense of place. The Duwamish have always lived along the Duwamish River. Unfortunately, the Duwamish River today is very polluted and is listed as a National Superfund Site. In addition, the Duwamish are still fighting to obtain federal recognition as a Tribe. Our tour guide suggested that impediments to their recognition include inter-tribal politics and jockeying for resources among the Tribes .
