Short Description of Activity
We volunteered with GNF to initiate a campground condition survey for targeted and far flung campgrounds within the forest. (Rec Specialist lost most of her staff and needed help.) This is for the purpose of seeing what repairs/ upgrades are needed and we are doing this because we think this will help facilitate appreciation and enjoyment of our nearby public lands. Broadband leader initially met with the Rec Specialist to discuss what format might work for this survey, and decided to use both a forest service form and a photolog form created by us. Broadband leader tried this out in early July in El Caso 1 campground in the far northern part of the forest. Subsequent to that, we met with the Rec Specialist to tweak our forms. Then three of us went with her to conduct the survey at 2 additional campgrounds and our system worked pretty well. We pick up any trash we see at the same time.
Reflection/Evaluation
It is going well. There are now 3 active members who will be doing more of these surveys and we can also function as team leaders if others want to participate. We are encouraged to provide our comments and insights regarding what might be appropriate for a better camping experience or note any impacts/ problems we observe. We plan on conducting surveys through next spring and it should prove an interesting way to see some far flung parts of the national forest that we have not experienced before, plus some enjoyable camping trips. Some of the locations will dovetail with our other monitoring activities which we can accomplish on the same trip.
