Short Description of Activity

We monitor McKenna Peak WSA and Dolores River Canyon WSA for the BLM monthly. We drive miles to remote locations to try a different access point every month to monitor more of the large areas. We camp out and hike in order to collect reports from each WSA because the distances are so great. We are looking for any signs of human disturbance, invasive plants, etc. We take pictures and fill out monitoring reports and turn them in to the Dolores Public Lands Office BLM Park Ranger Jon Whitehead.
We monitored in May on 5-16 and 5-20 separately, June 22-23rd, July 23-25, and Aug 21-22nd 2025.

Reflection/Evaluation

The goal is to monitor monthly and protect the WSAs. The distances are far away so we found out it’s better to camp and hike so we can see more of each WSA instead of driving. We have not seen another person in these remote WSAs. People seem to be honoring the posted signs and not driving into or damaging these areas. We will continue monitoring because the BLM employees no longer have time to reach these remote areas because of federal budget cuts. We’re honored to help our BLM partners while meeting our stewardship goals. It’s become our favorite project.
