Short Description of Activity

Five White Mesa Coalition zoom meetings advocating against uranium processing at White Mesa Mill. Participated in letter construction centered around White Mesa Ute Mountain Ute tribal concerns and a second letter related to Four Corners advocating against interest in new uranium mining. We are also advocating against transportation of uranium from Madagascar to White Mesa Mill. Our Broadband and Northern San Juan signed on to the initial letter and have sent new people to join in on the coalition.

Montezuma County Commissioners are being lobbied to support nuclear energy by Northwest Colorado Energy Initiative and through our local Republican Party supported two meetings I attended. I spoke out against promoting nuclear energy because those small reactors have to go somewhere and with 72% public lands in Montezuma County- I’m pretty sure I know where they’d want to put them! I wrote a Letter to the Editor about how Green Amendment could help stop uranium mining in CO. She asked me to write an Opinion article and Jason helped edit it. But she decided not to print it.

Reflection/Evaluation

The goal of these activities is to advocate against nuclear energy, renewed uranium mining, and processing uranium and mossanite at White Mesa Mill. I’m trying to get others from my Broadband interested in advocating against uranium and was successful at interesting at least two members to attend the local meetings with me. I spoke about renewed interest in uranium mining and these meetings at my church and the Pastor came to one of the local meetings. The County Commissioners recognize me now and don’t seem to value my presence at their meetings. Oh well!
