Key Issue: Livestock Grazing Management
Activity Type: Stewardship (monitoring, sampling, planting, etc.)
Key Partners: Gila National Forest
Landscape/area: Gila National Forest (2658321 acres)
Measurable Outcomes
Outcome 1: Trail/land monitored (2 surveys)
Outcome 2: Hiked (4.5 miles)
Short Description of Activity
On Aug. 20, three GOBs went to Goat Canyon and the adjacent canyon in the Saddlerock Riparian area. There was no cow sign. The barriers to the major part of Goat Canyon had not been breached. On the same day, 2 team members monitored the Stone Creek area (Luna allotment) while scouting the area for stream restoration monitoring photo points.
Reflection/Evaluation
A few weeks before, we had reported that the gate cutting off access to both canyons (Goat and adjacent canyon) had been cut completely through. It had not been fixed, and there were atv tracks going as far as physically possible in the area. From our experience on this trip to Stone Creek, we think we can accomplish two goals at the same time during future monitoring trips to this area: that includes a 2 hour drive one way 1) Monitor for cattle presence; 2) Stream restoration photo point monitoring. This would be an efficient use of our time and would help the public land agency with two important monitoring efforts.
