Short Description of Activity
Two GOB team members met with GNF Natural Resource Specialist to scout for photo monitoring points related to restoration of Stone Creek, near the NM/ AZ border within GNF. We plan on actually setting the photo points during our Sept. camp out and service project during Public Lands Day (or thereabouts anyway!). We were highly disappointed, while driving down to access the area, to observe timber logging in an previously area used by campers, etc. While we figured some of it was to clear trees from near power lines, it appeared to be excessive on the slope above such that we were dismayed and had questions. The result is that the GNF Silviculturist is planning on speaking with our group during our Sept. service project so that we can ask questions, etc. Meanwhile, we are in the process of obtaining the pre- project photographs for photo comparisons through time.
Reflection/Evaluation
Our scouting trip went well, giving us a chance to come up with at least 5 potential photo points. GNF staff will produce maps of this area with coordinates. We are also communicating with Bat Conservation International staff who obtained the grant funding and are performing the stream restoration in conjunction with GNF. We know the Stone Creek area very well because it is one of the places we monitor for livestock grazing. We figure that it would be efficient to help initiate and monitor the creek restoration efforts at the same time, given it is a 2.5 hour drive one way to reach this corner of GNF. We are hopeful that this restoration work will help improve the condition of the stream and meadow, particularly in conjunction with careful monitoring for trespass cattle.
