A Float with HeART: Broads Have Experience of a Lifetime on the San Juan River

This past May, we partnered with Holiday River Expeditions and special guests, Susan Kearns and LD Delano, to create an experience of a lifetime—a float with HeArt on the beautiful San Juan River.
The San Juan River forms the northern limit of the present-day territory of the Diné (Navajo) People. For thousands of years, the water of the San Juan River has meant life to various cultural and Indigenous groups; their artifacts still line the walls and side canyons of the river.
Rafters explored the amazing Utah landscape while learning new watercolor techniques and creative exercises to capture memories of the gorgeous canyon.
We’d like to give a very special thank you to Holiday River Expeditions, LD Delano, and Susan Kearns! Holiday Rivers Expeditions donated a portion of each registration fee. LD Delano organized the trip, and Susan Kearns graciously donated her time and expertise for this adventure.
Susan Kearns has been drawing and painting all her life. She has won awards in juried shows, shown in several galleries, and painted more than a dozen public and privately commissioned murals. She recently retired as Broads communications director, and has led watercolor workshops at several Broadwalk events over the 10+ years she was on staff.
Finding Our New Leader!
In March, a team of incredible volunteers led by Cyndi Anderson (Hiring Committee Chair & Willamette Valley Broadband) came together to conduct a thorough national search for our new Executive Director, Reba Elliott.
We extend our gratitude to the Hiring Committee for donating their time and expertise to the search process:
- Scott Bowler (Central & Eastern Oregon Bitterbrush Broadband)
- Joe Breddan (Broads Council of Advisors)
- Nancy Frost (Current Broads Board Member & Nor’Easter Broadband)
- Penny Kroening (Northern San Juan Broadband)
- Chandra LeGue (Willamette Valley Broadband)
- Mary O’Brien (Former Broads Board Member)
- Micky Ryan (Former Broads Board Member & Cascade Volcanoes Broadband)
- Jane Lindsey (Broads Membership Program Manager)
We are thrilled to have Reba’s experience, vision, energy, and leadership as we begin work on a new strategic plan to guide Broad’s grassroots work on behalf of the public lands and waters we share and love.
Thank YOU for the Success of Our “Urgently Mothering Nature” Campaign!
In these dangerous times of unprecedented challenge to public lands, our grassroots work is more essential than ever! That’s why last spring we launched a special campaign—Urgently Mothering Nature—to support our grassroots work for America’s public lands and waters.
Our wildest thanks to everyone who gave to our Urgently Mothering Nature campaign. Your kind support helps ensure that Mother Earth—and the wildlife that depends on her—will continue to have a strong voice for generations to come! We are happy to share that we reached our ambitious goal to raise $100,000—an enormous accomplishment and a testament to your commitment to Broads. Our final push came from a group of generous and dedicated donors who agreed to match all donations raised up to $25,000, and Boulder Mountain Guest Ranch which donated a 2-night stay drawing. Thank you supporters and Boulder Mountain Guest Ranch!
And speaking of the drawing, congratulations to our winner Donna Harris D.V.M. of Bend, OR! Donna shared this about her Broads involvement starting over a decade ago:
“Soon after reading a local newspaper article in 2013 on a newly formed local chapter of the Broads in Bend, Or., I was intrigued by this group of dedicated women who definitely fit the boots -on- the -ground mentality of getting involved in local environmental issues by using words followed by action. Joining the Bitterbrush Broads gave me the chance to test Edward Abbey’s “ sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul”. As a member and volunteer, I have enjoyed not only participating in fun local hikes , socials, and outings, but also in service projects. These include: endless pulling of noxious weeds at a central Or campground, monitoring a rare wildflower along a stream restoration project in the Ochoco Mountains, helping tear down a wildlife unfriendly barbed wire fence in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho, and restoring native habitat near Summer Lake Wildlife Preserve in OR.”
“Public protests have also been at the forefront of my membership! This photo of me with my sign was published on the online version of Outdoor Magazine during the Bitterbrush Broads protest during the 2016 41 day takeover of our Malheur National Wildlife Preserve by the Bundy followers!”
Who led the Urgently Mothering Nature campaign?
The Urgently Mothering Nature campaign was spearheaded by a talented group of leaders on our Transitional Development Committee (TDC): Shelley Silbert (Broads Former Executive Director, 2013-2022), Maya Abels (Willamette Valley Broadband), Penelope Peterson (Polly Dyer Seattle Broadband), Kristy Weber (Former Broads Board Member) and Jane Lindsey (Broads Membership Program Manager). Shelley graciously returned for this role after retiring in 2022 to lead us in our spring fundraising efforts. We are beyond grateful for her guidance and commitment—and so inspired by her deep commitment to our work.
The TDC met each month, starting in November 2024, to discuss fundraising strategies, submit grant requests, connect with our supporters to encourage support, and host a Broadband Leader Monthly Connect discussion and Board training. We are beyond grateful for TDC’s successful efforts in engaging and inspiring our members. And, a special acknowledgement to Lauri Costello (Former Broads Board Member) for helping to create the campaign.

A Word About Our Membership Cost Increase…
Broads Membership now starts at $50 per year.
The cost of fighting back against the new political threats to America’s wild public lands and bedrock environmental laws—along with current economic realities—has necessitated an increase in Broads’ yearly membership dues.
Wilderness and public lands are for everyone; they are the heritage of all and a gift to future generations. We welcome all levels of giving, and will gladly include supporters on our national email list if you are unable to contribute at $50 a year.
We’ve also started a membership FAQ list with answers to questions like:
I’m an existing Broads supporter. How will I know my membership has expired?
- You can log into your Broads member portal to review your last donation date and make a new contribution.
- If you are set to not receive paper communications from us, you’ll get an email reminder when your membership support expires. (Please stay subscribed to our communications!)
- We will mail you a paper renewal reminder if you receive mail from us, in addition to the email membership renewal reminder during the month of your membership expiration.
- You may even get a renewal call from your local Broadband Leadership team or Broads staff.
